Air pollution of Chlorine Gas

Over the years chlorine gas and hydrochloride solution have been with varying degrees of success for scrubbing systems emitting obnoxious odor into the atmosphere. Ever since the 1922 united States patent of Henderson and Haggard, many attempts have been made to control offensive organic odors with chlorine. The Chlorine odor usually most difficult to control are those produced by fat rendering works and fish reduction plants, but these have been successfully removed by chlorine dioxide.

The scrubbing tower must be made of corrosion- resistant materials to handle the chlorine dioxide solution. the ClO2 can be generated by either of two methods described previously. The ClO2 solution is recirculated from the sump in the scrubbing tower to the spray nozzle header that discharged a curtain of water above the lower coke-packed tray. The upper eliminator tray also coke-packed, is used to prevent undue loss of chlorine dioxide solution by entrainment in the exit air. Satisfactory results can be obtained with a ClO2 solution having a strength of between 100 to 500 ppm. The exact strength and the amount recirculated will depend upon the physical dimension of the tower and the amount of air being scrubbed.
